Last Lap Problems Keep Dunn From Victory Lane at Mohawk Raceway; Rebounds From First Lap Crash at Canandaigua to Finish 11th

In this sport, nothing is a sure thing, as Billy Dunn found out on Friday night.  Just as it appeared that he had the race won, problems developed on the final lap, coming out of the final corner and what appeared to be a sure win faded away to a disappointing second place finish in a rare appearance with the 358 Modified at Mohawk International Raceway.

After a fourth place finish in his heat race at Mohawk Raceway, Dunn had to start the 40 lap main event from 14th place.  It didn’t take long to show that he was the fastest car on the track as he positioned himself inside the top ten after just three laps.  By lap 16 he was in the top five, and continued to gain ground on the leaders.  With ten laps remaining, he had caught the leader, and made what appeared to be the winning pass with just seven laps to go.  A caution came out on lap 36 setting up a four lap shootout to the finish, and after surviving a strong battle for the top spot on the restart, he pulled ahead slightly in the closing laps.  On the final lap of the race, he felt the car bobble in turn one and two, but the car came to life on the backstretch again.  As they approached the final two corners, Dunn felt the car lose power completely and was pushed to the finish by the second place car who was an unfortunate victim of the unexpected loss of power.  Dunn finished the race with a disappointing second place finish.

“That is a tough one to take”, says Dunn after the race.  “We had a great car and it looked like we had it won coming to the checkered.  “I feel bad for Matt (Billings), he was right behind us, and had no place to go.  At least we were both able to finish the race”.

The next stop on the weekend was the usual visit to Canandaigua Motorsports Park.  Dunn started his heat from the back of the pack and quickly moved through the field to finish third.  In the 35 lap main event, problems occurred right at the drop of the green flag, collecting Dunn and several others.  He was able to drive away with minimal damage, but would have to restart from the rear of the field.  Dunn was able to work his way back to 11th at the checkered flag.

“We haven’t had much luck this weekend”, says Dunn.  “Tonight we were in a crash on the very first lap, and we had come from the back.  We managed to get back to 11th, but we really could have used a couple of cautions toward the end”.

Dunn will be back at Canandaigua again this weekend, looking to return to the winning form he had a couple weeks earlier.  He currently sits seventh in track points, just 19 points out of the top five.

Dunn would like to thank Number One Speed, Pemco Contracting, SUNY Canton, FastLube of Watertown, Frosty’s Ice Cream, American Traditions Motorsports, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, Jiffy Dumpster and Bicknell Racing Products for their continued support for the 2012 racing season.
